Advantages and Disadvantages of being small

• Compared to tall people, a plane journey is a dream for small people because of the leg room they have.
• Clothes shopping is a breeze for small people, they spend about half the amount of money that tall people spend, because the kids section is an option for them.
• In P.E. class, when it came to hurdles, it was a no go for small people. To sum it up, embarrassing.
• Trying to move the showerhead for a small people after someone who is tall was in it, impossible.
• Bumping your head is reduced severely for a small person because you can walk under a lot of things that tall people can't.
• Compared to tall people, you are in a much more awkward position in amusement parks. The worry is whether you are tall enough for the ride or not.
• If you are older, and you are small, you are more likely to be mistaken to be younger than you actually are, which is a compliment for elder people.

People who have a lack in height are often discriminated in today's world. The proper term for this is heightism. This term was created in 1971 by sociologist Saul Feldman in a paper he wrote.

Nicola Persico, Andrew Postlewaite and Dan Silverman found that a 1.8% increase in wages accompanies every additional inch of height. They also found that at age 16, an increase in height by one inch lead to an increase of 2.6% in adult male's wages.


Also, when it comes to relationships, short men are reduced in the choices of girls because a lot of women cannot seem to go out with a guy just because they are smaller than them. I for one do not understand why that is a problem because what difference does it really make to the being taller than the man being taller?

• Small people are generally teased for their height, but there are every day struggles they deal with that tall people would hate if they were small too.

1. If you are small, a lot of people think it's funny to pat you on the head. It's not funny.

2. They also like to call you cute. That gets annoying very fast.

3. Because small people have small legs, they have to alter their trousers after they buy them, making it very expensive.

4. Shelves are a problem. Guaranteed there is something a small person has been looking for for years in their house because it's high up on a shelf where they can't reach.

5. You may forget about going to a concert if you have to stand. It is a huge waste of time.

6. Going back to shelves, there is nothing more embarrassing than asking a shop worker to pass you something from the shelf because you can't reach it.

7. Small girls always have to wear heels to work, if they don't want to be a foot shorter than their co-workers.

8. For some reason, it is fascinating to pick up a small person. It is rude and annoying to be picked up.

9. A small person has to look up to everyone, literally.

10. Having your shoulder used as an armrest, and sometimes your head too. I am not furniture.

11. Taking pictures is a challenge. Your tall friends do not need to brag because they look like a giant beside you, and also if you do want to be taller, people just don't understand not to get your feet in the photo when they are taking it.
12. The worst of all is road trips. You always have to be the one to sit in the middle of the car just because it's the smallest seat.

There have been many inventions for small people to help them in their daily lives. here are a couple examples:

 

• One of the biggest problems with small people is driving. their legs are not long enough to reach the pedals, so obviously that is an issue. People have realised and reacted to this by making things called Easy Rider Pedal Extenders. they basically attach to the pedals of the car, and you can adjust them to fit your height, making it possible for you to drive.

• There are clothing company's that are specific to small people, so they can easily shop for clothes that are in their size range. it makes it a lot easier to purchase clothes that are a suitable fit for them, as kids clothes might fit them in one aspect e.g. length, but not in another e.g. chest size.

People with height issues, not just dwarves, do find it hard to accomplish certain things in their day to day lives. By inventing things to help them along, it will make their lives a lot easier and give them a better chance at accomplishing things.

Researchers have found that the reason of some people being smaller than others are because of a shortage in genes.

There was two studies done in America that included 12,000 people, and a link was found between a decrease in height and the amount of missing genetic material. Height is generally passed down through families, usually the mother. Scientists are now saying this does not explain everything when comparing the variations between people. With the Little People of America (LPA) defining dwarfism as a medical or genetic condition, it usually results in an adult height of 4'10''. Disproportionate dwarfism is when one or more body parts are either large or small in comparison to a regular person. Proportionate dwarfism is when the body parts are proportional but they are smaller.
